The story

Why this exists

A friend of mine runs a small café. Twenty seats, tight menu, family operation. Every time I visited, he was juggling three things: a notebook for sales, WhatsApp voice notes to suppliers, and a rough count of chicken and rice in his head.

I asked why he didn't use Square or Toast. He laughed. Toast wanted around $600 a month plus hardware plus setup. His revenue was maybe $1,800 a month. The math didn't work — the monthly software fee alone would take about one-third of that revenue, before hardware and setup.

So he was doing it the way most independent restaurants around the world do it — in his head. Which meant at the end of every month, he had a rough sense of how it went, no idea what his best day was, and no warning when stock was about to run out until it did.

That's the gap TableAI fills. Not for the places that need a Toast — for the ones that need to know yesterday's number and what's about to run out.

The approach

Why WhatsApp

WhatsApp is already open on most restaurant owners' phones. They text suppliers on it. They text staff on it. They text family on it. Billions of users worldwide, and for independent restaurant operators outside the US it's often the default communication tool for everything.

We could have built an app. But installing another app means one more login, one more thing to remember, one more thing to open. WhatsApp is where you already are.

Text us "sold 80 today" or "got 20kg chicken" and we log it. Every morning at 7am we send a briefing — yesterday's numbers, what's low, what to expect today. That's the whole product.

TableAI is founder-built. Not a technical founder — no computer science degree, no engineering background. The first version was built over a couple of months using AI-assisted coding tools, watching a real café to understand what actually mattered day-to-day.

That's worth saying because it matters: we're building for people running independent restaurants, not for VCs or enterprise buyers. The bar is "does a busy restaurant owner actually want to use this every day?" If the answer is no, we fix it.
